The Schumann resonance is a genuine, measurable physics phenomenon. The Earth's surface and the ionosphere form a vast electromagnetic cavity, and lightning strikes — around forty-four every second, somewhere on the planet — excite that cavity into resonance. The result is a set of standing electromagnetic waves circling the globe, with a fundamental frequency of approximately 7.83 hertz.
It's named for the German physicist Winfried Otto Schumann, who calculated the phenomenon mathematically in 1952, decades before it could be reliably measured. Today it's monitored continuously by research stations around the world, and its fundamental frequency has remained remarkably stable since measurement began.
Why 7.83Hz specifically matters
Human brainwave activity is conventionally divided into bands: beta (alert, active thinking), alpha (relaxed wakefulness), theta (deep meditation, the hypnagogic threshold between waking and sleep), and delta (deep sleep). Theta sits roughly between 4 and 8 hertz.
7.83Hz falls at the very top edge of that theta band — the frequency contemplative traditions have spent millennia trying to access deliberately, and the frequency the planet itself has apparently been producing since long before anything was around to measure it.
Tesla and the resonance
Nikola Tesla identified and worked with this frequency decades before Schumann's formal calculation, incorporating it into his broader theories about the relationship between the Earth's electromagnetic field and human consciousness — ideas that were, characteristically, ahead of the theoretical framework available to test them.
Whether — and how — this planetary frequency interacts with human neurology remains an area of active, and contested, research. What isn't contested is that the resonance itself is real, measurable physics, not metaphor.
