Dr. Michael Persinger (1945–2018) was a neuroscientist at Laurentian University in Canada who spent much of his career investigating a genuinely provocative question: could the Earth's geomagnetic field, and localised variations in electromagnetic activity, play a measurable role in mediating human states of consciousness?
He is most widely known for the "God Helmet" experiments — a device delivering weak, complex magnetic fields to the temporal lobes of test subjects, with some participants reporting sensed presences or altered states during exposure. Persinger interpreted these results as evidence that certain mystical or anomalous experiences might have a neurological, electromagnetic basis rather than a purely subjective or supernatural one.
Why this remains contested science
It's important to be direct about the current state of this research: replication attempts by other laboratories have produced mixed results, with some researchers unable to reproduce Persinger's original findings under matched conditions, and others raising methodological questions about the original studies. Persinger's broader body of work on geomagnetic activity and human behaviour — including studies correlating geomagnetic disturbances with reported anomalous experiences — occupies a similarly contested position: taken seriously as a research question, but not settled science.
Why he's worth reading anyway
